ELMHURST & CORONA
We love our neighborhood — both the people AND the place. We love the diversity of ethnicities and cultures. Public school report cards have translation in 9 different languages! Elmhurst and Corona residents are predominantly from Central and South America as well as from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia. Imagine the richness in the visual arts, food, customs, dance, festivals, etc. We also love the easy access to public transportation and the convenience in shopping and dining.
Here are some facts that remind us more work is needed:
Close to half of the population is on income support. Family incomes are insufficient.
With 66% foreign born, 53% of the population have limited English proficiency. Many fail to access services and opportunities because of this language barrier.
Our school children are in the “high risk” category as it pertains to quality educational programming. Current school overcrowding is part of the challenge.
